9 Activities for Making this Holiday Season Memorable

Feeling festive? Get in the holiday spirit with a few of the activities below!

Send out Christmas Cards

Stay connected and show a little love to your friends and family with Christmas cards! A physical card to display in the house is especially meaningful this year when we might not be able to see all our loved ones in person. Get crafty with your family by making cards from scratch. If you’re not the crafty type purchase a few cards from a local vendor and have everyone write a personalized message to your recipients!

Festive Christmas Lights Drive

Christmas lights are usually one of the first signs the holiday season is among us. Grab the family and a hot chocolate and head out for a drive to see Christmas Lights! If weather permits, bundle up and enjoy a winter walk through your neighborhood taking in the lights.

If you are in the Saskatoon area, be sure to check out the BHP Enchanted Forest this season! Open from November 20th to January 9th, this beautiful display of lights will be sure to get you in the holiday spirit.

Stay connected with loved ones through virtual connection

Are we all getting to be experts on using virtual platforms? Since March many of us have been using various platforms to stay connected to our loved ones. As the holiday season might look a little different this year, keep up with as many traditions as you can in a virtual setting.

A few ideas: Gather a group on a virtual call and host an Ugly Christmas Sweater party or schedule your call over dinner to virtually share a meal. One way to ensure you stay connected to your loved ones is to set up a Virtual 12 Days of Christmas – schedule a call with 12 loved ones over the holiday season.

Decorate the house in its holiday best

Although your house might not have as many guests as previous years, take the time to set up your holiday decorations! Put on your favourite holiday playlist and get to work. It’s important to maintain those traditions that bring us joy this season!

Family Baking

What are you favourite family recipes? Many families have traditions around baking and sharing food. Although gathering in person looks different this year, keep these traditions going and find new ways to celebrate the season. Make a day of it and drop off some delicious baking to your loved ones near you! Please remember to follow all physical distancing guidelines set out by the Government of Saskatchewan.

Stay active outdoors

Looking for ways to keep moving this season? Give the following ideas a try:

  • Tobogganing
  • Shoveling snow
  • Ice skating
  • Bundle up with a Winter walk

Charitable Giving

For some, the holiday season can be a challenging time – especially this year. Help spread some holiday spirit by getting involved in local charitable initiatives. Consider donating gently used outer wear to those in need, donate food and supplies to your local food bank, or if you are able, make a financial contribution to an organization that is meaningful to you.

Holiday Movie Night

From old classic favourites to new movies coming out every year, there is no shortage of movies to watch over the holiday season! Cozy up with your favourite snacks and blankets and enjoy a relaxing holiday themed movie night. Make a list now of all the movies you want to watch and see how many you get through before the New Year!

Gingerbread House Decorating Competition

Who says the holiday season can’t involve some healthy competition? Host a virtual gingerbread house making competition!

  1. Get a few households to all buy the necessary materials: Gingerbread house, icing, and candies for decorating!
  2. Get creative and build your best gingerbread house.
  3. Share your creations over a virtual call and vote on the best creation! You could post the different houses on social media and get others to vote as well.
